How You Can Help

For almost 40 years, Oaky Woods has been the closest thing we will ever have to a national forest in Houston County. Oaky Woods is undisturbed nature at its best; a tranquil place where residents can hunt, fish, camp, observe plant and animal life or ride mountain bikes while surrounded by nature's awesome glory.

Oaky Woods is simply irreplaceable. If Oaky Woods is developed into 30,000 or more residential and commercial properties, as its new owners have announced plans to do, its potential for greenspace, wildlife management, outdoor recreation and nature observation will be lost to the citizens of Houston County and Georgia forever!

We have one last opportunity to save Oaky Woods: through the combination of a local bond issue, along with State and Federal resources, we just may be able to preserve this very important property for future generations.

Please help us save Oaky Woods.

Speak Out

Talk to your friends, neighbors & coworkers about Oaky Woods. Refer them to this site for more information.

Write letters to your local papers. Let readers know YOU support the preservation of Oaky Woods. Please keep your letter positive and refrain from speaking about the owners in negative terms. The land can not be condemned for public use, neither can we pay more than appraised value. We need the cooperation of the owners to put together a workable deal and they have the opportunity to  preserve this very valuable property for future generations through their willingness to sell at a fair price. The lease to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources for a Wildlife Management area is renewed on a yearly basis and can be terminated with only a 30 day notice to the state. With the land owners cooperation, WE can build a coalition of local, state and federal monies, with the assistance of  our elected officials, to purchase Oaky Woods.

If you live in Houston County, contact our local legislative delegation. Most importantly, contact the Houston County Board of Commissioners. Let your elected officials know that saving Oaky Woods is very important to you, and you support a bond issue to generate the funds necessary to purchase the property. Even if you don't live in Houston County, contacting your local legislators will help - saving Oaky Woods will benefit all citizens of our state.

Volunteer

Are you willing to give your time to help Save Oaky Woods? We need volunteers to speak to civic clubs, man booths at local events and shows, and assist with many other tasks necessary to help us get the word out and build support for saving Oaky Woods. If you'd like to add your name to our volunteer roster, please contact us.

Donate

Would you like to make a contribution, either in the form of a monetary donation or perhaps as an in-kind service? Do you have a resource we can use that you think can help us spread our message? Please contact us and let us know!

(Please note that Save Oaky Woods is an ad-hoc, grassroots organization of concerned citizens from Houston County and the surrounding area. Save Oaky Woods is not currently incorporated; therefore we do not have legal status as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, but we are working on this process. 100% of all monies collected is used to purchase bumper stickers or other costs and all involved persons are volunteers)

Participate

If you care about Oaky Woods, it's absolutely critical that you not be content to sit on the sidelines on this issue. Educate your friends & neighbors. Attend local meetings and make your presence known! Participate in the process - its the only chance we have to save Oaky Woods! This process will take a lot of work and effort, but keep this thought in mind:

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
